A Nissan Juke gearbox repair was carried out in the Stephens Engineering workshop recently.
The Nissan Juke was brought into the workshop for repair and had been recovered into our workshop as result of several automatic transmission problems affecting the Nissan Juke.
The owner of the Nissan Juke reported that there was a whine and some judder when taking off and that these faults were usually followed by the Nissan Juke stalling.
To begin the Nissan Juke gearbox repair, we removed the Nissan Juke automatic gearbox and stripped the automatic transmission down to undertake a complete inspection of the Nissan Juke gearbox.
At Stephens Engineering, we are automatic transmission experts and our experience of the Nissan Juke automatic transmission and the Nissan Qashqai automatic transmissions has found that both the Juke and Qashqai automatic transmission units suffer from lack of lubrication and bush wear. With our automatic gearbox knowledge and expertise, at Stephens Engineering in Ware, we are skilled in carrying out several modifications to improve these failures of the Nissan automatic transmission unit. Once the gearbox repairs to the Nissan Juke had been carried out, we set the transmission to run on our dyno tester to monitor noise and performance of the Nissan Juke automatic transmission which in our experience will give the transmission unit a longer life. When an automatic transmission is refitted, it is important to make sure that the all adaptions carried out to the vehicle, are re-set.
After road testing the vehicle, the Nissan Juke gearbox repair was completed and the vehicle returned to it’s owner.
Land Rover Discovery Gearbox Fault Repaired: a 2009 Land Rover Discovery gearbox repair was carried out in the Stephens Engineering workshop recently. The Land Rover Discovery was brought into the workshop with a complaint of a vibration throughout all the Land Rover Discovery gear changes when on a light throttle. The Discovery had no fault codes recorded.
The 2009 Land Rover Discovery automatic gearbox is the Z.F 6hp26 automatic transmission. At fairly high mileage, the torque converter can slip and judder which produces a vibration during gear changes.
The Land Rover Discovery gearbox repair required the removal of the gearbox. The gearbox was removed and dismantled in the Stephens Engineering workshop and excessive wear was shown to have occurred to the main bushings and the drums were also scored. The Land Rover Discovery automatic transmission was overhauled which included the Discovery’s clutches and solenoids.
To clean the torque converter, it was cut open and the torque converter was placed in the ultrasonic cleaner. Thorough examination of the automatic transmission unit showed that the lock up clutch plates were worn, as were the sealing rings. The clutch plates and sealing rings were replaced, the torque converter was re-welded and then balanced and checked for leaks.
The lock up operation of the torque converter of the Z.F 6hp26 automatic transmission is critical and its pre-load is set on a special rig within the specialist machine workshop at Stephens Engineering. A modified sump assembly was also fitted prior to the Land Rover Discovery’s automatic transmission being refitted as the original sump assembly could not be removed for a filter change once it had been fitted back into the Discovery’s chassis.
Running computer adaptions were carried out and the Land Rover Discovery gearbox repair was checked and the vehicle was taken on a long run. A final check for leaks was undertaken, the Land Rover Discovery gearbox repair had been successfully completed and ready for the customer.

Gearbox Repair – A Week in the Workshop
At Stephens Engineering, we’re known for our knowledge and expertise in fault finding and the carrying out of automatic gearbox repair. Our knowledge and experience gives us the edge; we have worked on most automatic transmission units and over the years, we have rectified a wide range of faults and problems.
We often see vehicles being brought into the Stephens Engineering workshop and our customers report a problem with the gearbox and more often than not, they’re right, however, there are occasions when a customer experiences problems with their car and believes it to be transmission related and our experience tells us that this possibly is not the case. With our automatic gearbox fault finding experience, we’re able to recognise faults that appear to be gearbox problems but are not the result of a gearbox fault. A good example of this scenario is the Bentley recently brought into the workshop with a transmission fault and a vehicle owner considering a new automatic transmission for their Bentley. Whilst there was certainly an issue with the performance of the Bentley, there was a particularly bad whine and vibration when the vehicle was under acceleration, our experience told us this was not a transmission issue. Examination of the transmission unit confirmed that the problem was, in fact, the gearbox and engine mounting.
Our customer could have been faced with an expensive repair bill to replace the complete transmission unit, however, with our knowledge and skill, we were able to find the true cause of the problem and get the vehicle back on the road quickly.
If you suspect your vehicle has a problem with it’s automatic transmission, book your car in to the Stephens Engineering workshop in Ware, the automatic transmission experts fault finding and repairing automatic transmissions for over 40 years.
Gearboxes Repairs in Ware
The Stephens Engineering workshop has been extremely busy over the past month repairing automatic gearboxes and here’s just a snapshot of a week in the Stephens Engineering workshop where we carry out our gearbox repair to a range of different vehicles.
This week we have repaired the automatic transmission on many cars and one of the first was a 2009 Audi A5. The Audi A5 has an eight speed, front wheel drive automatic transmission was brought into us because of the gearbox warning light showing during motorway driving and harsh gear changes. After a diagnostic scan, the Audi A5 automatic transmission was removed and dismantled and after re-fitting the automatic transmission, the Audi A5 is now running well.
We’ve repaired a Bentley four wheel drive transmission with the six speed Z F unit. The Bentley was brought into the workshop with a complaint of a bad whine and vibration whilst the Bentley was under acceleration. Our customer was convinced the issue was with the Bentley’s gearbox, however, we were not convinced and after several checks, we decided to change all the Bentley’s gearbox and engine mountings before we condemned the Bentley’s automatic transmission. A road test confirmed our expert opinion was correct.
We’re repaired the automatic transmission of a 2009 Mercedes B Class. One of the most common automatic transmission failures for both the Mercedes B Class and Mercedes A Class fitted with the C V T type transmission are electrical. The control unit for this gearbox is in the sump, making it subject to extreme temperature change and small particles of metal can result in the control unit getting confused. We rectified the fault by replacing the Mercedes B Class transmission control unit. This then needs to be programmed and reset. Transmission fluid and filter are also changed.
The next gearbox repair to be carried out was a 2006 Nissan Note. The Nissan Note has a gearbox problem and was experiencing fourth gear slip. As the Nissan Note had covered more than 100,000 miles, most of the Nissan Note automatic transmission components were showing signs of extensive wear. To carry out a gearbox repair to this Nissan Note, we undertook a complete overhaul of the Nissan Note’s automatic transmission and after long road test and leak check, the vehicle was running well.
When you bring your vehicle to Stephens Engineering, you can be sure that your gearbox repair is being carried out by an experienced team of automatic transmission experts.

BMW 1 Series Gearbox Repair
A 2009 BMW 1 series was brought into the workshop with the transmission warning light showing. We ran a diagnostic check and the diagnostic print out recorded issues with the 4th and 5th gear ratio.
The automatic gearbox of the BMW was removed and stripped down and thoroughly examined. All the components were noted to all be in satisfactory condition with the exception of the “E” clutch unit. The “E” clutch unit is applied in 4th and 5th gear and on this BMW 1 Series, had a suffered a crack to the drum which was causing a loss of hydraulic pressure. The loss of hydraulic pressure within the unit affected the performance of the vehicle. The BMW 1 Series gearbox repair started by replacing the drum of the clutch, the bushes were checked and also the hydraulic pressure. All the parts of the automatic gearbox were checked and cleaned and the gearbox was re-assembled. The clutch unit and gearbox were refitted and all the codes had cleared. A long road test was carried out and all faults were gone and the vehicle was running well.
At Stephens Engineering, we can run diagnostic tests to find the fault when you’re transmission warning starts to show and carry out the repairs required. Avoid damage to your engine and let the specialists in automatic transmissions sort out your vehicle’s fault code.

Nissan Juke Gearbox Repair
A 2011 Nissan Juke was brought with a fault, the vehicle was juddering and stalling. During the automatic transmission diagnostic fault finding, we found that no trouble codes had been stored, so the Nissan Juke’s sump was removed for further inspection. Particles of metal were found to be present in the fluid in the sump, this indicate that the Nissan Juke automatic transmission needed to be removed.
The automatic gearbox was completely stripped and the torque converter was also cut open for repair.
As automatic transmission specialists, we have encountered a number of faults with this type of continuously variable transmission (CVT) previously. The faulty parts were replaced and a number of modifications were made. Once we had overhauled both the automatic transmission and the torque converter, we refitted them. Best the test run, the cooling system was thoroughly flushed through to remove all the metal particles in the lines.
The Nissan Juke gearbox repair was complete and after carrying out a long road test, we noted that the vehicle was running well without stalling and juddering.
Stephens Engineering have many years experience in rectifying and repairing automatic transmission faults. If you’re experiencing problems with your vehicle’s automatic transmission why put up with your vehicle juddering and stalling? We have carried out a number of automatic transmission repairs this week and here is a snapshot of what we see in our workshop:
2011 Mercedes Sprinter van with a loss of drive, the transmission required a complete overhaul after we discovered water had leaked from radiator into the gearbox.
2005 Nissan X-Trail, this vehicle was referred to us from a local garage with a whine from the automatic gearbox or transfer case. We weren’t convinced that automatic transmission repairs were needed and this fault was found to be a front wheel bear which we replaced, saving our customer the cost and inconvenience of a complete automatic transmission rebuild.
Mercedes 500 cl with a loud whine in the lower gears. We stripped down and completely overhauled the gearbox, replacing the worn and damaged parts.
2011 Nissan Juke, this vehicle was juddering and stalling. We carried out a diagnostic text, after removing the sump discovered metal particles. Automatic transmission repairs were needed so the automatic transmission was removed and overhauled.
