A 2010 Land Rover Freeland was brought into the workshop and the automatic gearbox specialists at Stephens Engineering carried out a Freelander gearbox repair.
The 2010 Freelander was brought into the workshop with the complaint that there was a violent vibration when the Freelander was pulling from rest. The Freelander was placed on the ramps within the workshop and then the Freelander was checked on the ramp and this revealed that the vibration was in both the transfer box and the Haldex unit on the rear differential. The Haldex differential unit calculates how much drive should be directed to the rear wheels.
After a thorough inspection on the ramp of the Freeland, we concluded that a failure of the Haldex unit had in turn resulted in the Freelander transfer box being damaged. The Freelander transfer box was stripped down and on stripping down the Freelander transfer box, we found the damage caused to the transfer box to be beyond economical repair. The damaged Freelander transfer box was replaced and the Freelander’s Haldex unit was repaired. The Haldex unit sits between the propshaft and the rear differential , appling the torque to the differential when the vehicle is pulling away or when manoeuvring at speed speeds. As a result, in addition, the Freelander propshaft was checked for damage and wear and then refitted.
The fault codes were cleared and the long road test confirmed that the Freelander gearbox repair had been successful and all was well.
The Stephens Engineering team recently carried out a Volkswagen Polo gearbox repair. The 2013 Volkswagen Polo gearbox repair was undertaken in our specialist workshop after this Volkswagen Polo had broken down. The Volkswagen Polo owner was advised that the breakdown was the due to a fault with the Polo’s mechatronic unit. This had broken down and the customer had been advised it was the mechatronic unit at fault.
Faults within the mechatronic unit are a common problem with Volkswagen vehicles fitted with a D.S.G. automatic gearbox. DSG automatic gearboxes are a combination of a manual transmission with a dual clutch and electronic control unit.
For Volkswagen vehicles with the DSG automatic gearbox, it is essential that prompt action is taken to quickly and accurately diagnose the fault to avoid possibly unnecessary and expensive vehicle repair costs.
Before the Volkswagen Polo gearbox repair started in the workshop, our expert gearbox technicians spent an hour retrieving all the Volkswagen Polo faults using the ODIS diagnostic tool which is the identical system used in main dealerships for VW, Audi, SEAT & Skoda.
The problem with this 2013 Volkswagen Polo DSG gear box was in fact a fault within the gearbox selection and not a problem with the Volkswagen mechatronic unit as initially thought when the Polo broke down. The Volkswagen Polo gearbox was removed and stripped as the ODIS diagnostic had diagnosed that the selectors were faulty. We replaced the Polo’s selectors and then the VW DSG gearbox was re-fitted. In addition, we also carried a check on the Polo’s clutch whilst the gearbox had been removed and the clutch was noted to still be quite serviceable.
Finally, a complete re-learn procedure was carried out and to confirm that the fault had been correctly identified and repaired, a long road test was undertaken which confirmed all was well and that the Volkswagen Polo gearbox repair had been successful.

The automatic transmission specialists at Stephens Engineering recently carried out a Mercedes 220 Cdi gearbox repair. The Mercedes 220 Cdi was brought into our specialist workshop with the complaint of a rattle from the Mercedes transmission unit when under hard acceleration. The 2013 Mercedes 220 Cdi has a seven speed automatic gearbox.
The Mercedes 220 Cdi was thoroughly checked for anything that might have worked loose or be vibrating within the engine as the Mercedes engine had been repaired previously.
Only when we were sure that the rattle from the Mercedes transmission unit was internal, was the Mercedes 220 Cdi automatic transmission removed. We removed the Mercedes gearbox sump and after inspection and examination of the gearbox sump, there did not appear to be anything wrong inside the Mercedes gearbox sump.
Next, the Mercedes torque converter was cut open and inspected, the Mercedes torque converters have balance weights fitted internally because of the stop-start technology. Examination of the torque converter revealed that the internal balance weights had worn and the wear to the torque converters’ balance weights resulted in excessive movement within the torque converter. To rectify the Mercedes’ gearbox rattle, we fitted one of our rebuilt units to the gearbox and then refitted the Mercedes automatic gearbox.
It is crucial for ‘stop-start’ vehicles, such as the Mercedes 220 Cdi, that the correct fluid is used. The Mercedes was subjected to a long road test which confirmed our fault diagnosis was correct and the Mercedes 220 Cdi gearbox repair had been successful and the vehicle was running now normally without the rattle on hard acceleration.
If your Mercedes 220 Cdi has a rattle during hard acceleration, book your vehicle into the Stephens Engineering workshop and let the automatic transmission experts repair your Mercedes automatic transmission.

A Mini Cooper gearbox repair was recently carried out by Ware automatic gearbox repair specialists at Stephens Engineering.
The 2003 Mini Cooper was brought into the workshop with a complaint that the Mini Cooper had a very noisy transmission and also, there was a delay in engaging the forward gears. The 2003 Mini Cooper has a C.V.T. which is a constantly variable transmission.
In our experience, the Mini Cooper CVT transmission works extremely hard and the bearings and drum are often found to wear considerably as a result of the drive belt tension. With the Mini Cooper CVT transmission unit, as it wears over time, the Mini gearbox requires careful inspection of all moving parts with the CVT transmission unit. When we remove and dismantle the Mini Cooper automatic transmission, we often find that it is necessary to replace most of the moving parts due to the work of this little unit.
Common problems with the Mini Cooper CVT transmission are wear and failure of the drums, the drive chain and all bearings within the Mini Cooper gearbox, as was the case with this 2003 Mini Cooper gearbox repair.
The Mini Cooper gearbox was refitted, after re-assembly and replacement of the worn drums, drive chain and bearings.
To ensure smooth running of the repaired Mini Cooper gearbox, it is crucial to set the vehicle adaptations to its control unit and finally a long road test allows the vehicle to finish its relearning procedure and confirmed that the Mini Cooper gearbox repair had been completed successfully and the vehicle was running smoothly again.

A Hyundai Accent gearbox repair was carried out recently in the Stephens Engineering workshop.
The 2008 Hyundai Accent was brought in with the complaint that a warning light came after the Hyundai Accent had been driven for a few miles. The Hyundai Accent fault codes were checked in the workshop and the Hyundai Accent fault code stated that the problem was in the torque converter circuit.
This Hyundai Accent had recently been in to a main dealership for a fluid leak from the transmission and the converter and the pump seal it runs on were replaced . The warning code only came on shortly after the repair carried out at the dealership. The opinion of the dealership was that this 2008 Hyundai Accent needed a new transmission unit.
The Hyundai Accent was brought into our workshop for a second opinion and on the Hyundai owner’s instructions, we removed the Hyundai gearbox and then fully dismantled the Hyundai automatic gearbox for a full and detailed inspection of the transmission unit. With a mileage of less than 40,000 miles, we were surprised this was necessary.
On inspection of the automatic transmission, we discovered there was not a great deal wrong with the main workings of the Hyundai Accent gearbox, however, inside the oil pump, the bush supporting the torque converter was missing and we could only assume that this was fused onto the old converter which had been replaced by the dealership.
The Hyundai Accent gearbox repair was carried out in the workshop and the oil pump assembly was replaced. In addition, we also replaced the Hyundai friction plates as they had suffered from lack of lubrication. The Hyundai Accent transmission was then re-fitted in the Stephens Engineering workshop and the Hyundai Accent was subject to a long road test which confirmed that the fault had been rectified by the automatic transmission specialists at Stephens Engineering and the vehicle was running well without the need for a new gearbox.
