Stephens Engineering Bentley Gearbox Repair
The automatic transmission experts at Stephens Engineering carried out a Bentley gearbox repair recently. A 2009 Bentley was brought in the Stephens Engineering workshop with the complaint of a bad whine and also vibration when the Bentley accelerated. The 2009 Bentley is fitted with a four wheel drive transmission, with the six speed ZF transmission unit. The customer brought the 2009 Bentley in to ourselves and believed that the bad whine and vibration whilst the Bentley was under acceleration was due to a problem with the ZF transmission unit. With our years of experience and expertise in repairing automatic transmissions, we were not convinced that the fault did lie with the Bentley ZF transmission unit. Prior to potentially condemning the Bentley’s transmission unit, we carried out several checks and examinations of the Bentley’s transmission unit. After a thorough examination of the Bentley ZF transmission unit, we decided to change all of the Bentley’s gearbox and engine mountings, these were fitted and in addition, the gearbox fluid and the sump filter were also changed. The Bentley was then taken out for a road test to check whether the whine and vibration had been resolved; the road test confirmed that the ZF transmission was not the problem and that we had carried out the Bentley gearbox repair by changing the gearbox and engine mountings, without the need to condemn the ZF transmission unit.
At Stephens Engineering, we deal with all aspects of automatic transmission faults and we’re able to identify the cause quickly.

Gearbox Repair – A Week in the Workshop
At Stephens Engineering, we’re known for our knowledge and expertise in fault finding and the carrying out of automatic gearbox repair. Our knowledge and experience gives us the edge; we have worked on most automatic transmission units and over the years, we have rectified a wide range of faults and problems.
We often see vehicles being brought into the Stephens Engineering workshop and our customers report a problem with the gearbox and more often than not, they’re right, however, there are occasions when a customer experiences problems with their car and believes it to be transmission related and our experience tells us that this possibly is not the case. With our automatic gearbox fault finding experience, we’re able to recognise faults that appear to be gearbox problems but are not the result of a gearbox fault. A good example of this scenario is the Bentley recently brought into the workshop with a transmission fault and a vehicle owner considering a new automatic transmission for their Bentley. Whilst there was certainly an issue with the performance of the Bentley, there was a particularly bad whine and vibration when the vehicle was under acceleration, our experience told us this was not a transmission issue. Examination of the transmission unit confirmed that the problem was, in fact, the gearbox and engine mounting.
Our customer could have been faced with an expensive repair bill to replace the complete transmission unit, however, with our knowledge and skill, we were able to find the true cause of the problem and get the vehicle back on the road quickly.
If you suspect your vehicle has a problem with it’s automatic transmission, book your car in to the Stephens Engineering workshop in Ware, the automatic transmission experts fault finding and repairing automatic transmissions for over 40 years.
BMW X5 Gearbox Repair by Stephens Engineering
A 2008 BMW X5 gearbox repair was recently carried out in the Stephens Engineering workshop. The 2008 BMW X5 has the ZF six speed automatic transmission. The earlier BMW X5 version used a GM five speed or the ZF five speed unit. The BMW X5 was subject to a road test which confirmed the problem was a slip in 5th and 6th gear of the BMW X5. The diagnostic scan noted the code “Slip from the E-clutch assembly”.
To commence the BMW X5 gearbox repair, the BMW X5 gearbox was removed and dismantled. The BMW’s E-clutch was then pressure tested whilst being subject to heat which confirmed the BMW E-clutch had a pressure loss. The E-clutch unit of the BMW X5 transmission was replaced with a ZF drum assembly and the transmission unit was then rebuilt using original ZF components. The valve body of the BMW X5 was up-rated and the automatic transmission was re-assembled. The automatic transmission unit was refitted with an exchange torque converter. The BMW X5 transmission control unit was adapted. To check that the fault had been successfully rectified, a long road test carried out and this confirmed that BMW X5 gearbox repair had been successful and that the gearbox of the 2008 BMW X5 was back to it’s original level of performance.

Nissan Note Gearbox Repair by Stephens Engineering
A 2006 Nissan Note gearbox repair has recently been carried by Stephens Engineering.
A 2006 Nissan Note was brought into the workshop with a gear slip in fourth gear. The Nissan Note fourth gear slip was the result of worn sealing rings within the clutch drum. The Nissan Note had covered more than 100,000 miles and the Nissan Note automatic transmission components were at the end of their useful life. The Nissan Note gearbox required a complete overhaul; the bushes and clutches were beyond repair. At Stephens Engineering, we are able to manufacture replacement bushes. The gearbox was overhauled and new bushes were fitted to the transmission unit. The worn out components were replaced. In addition, the torque converter and solenoids were replaced to the automatic transmission unit of the Nissan Note and the Nissan’s tolerances were put back to their original clearances. At Stephens Engineering, we carry out a long road test to ensure that the fault had been resolved and then a leak check proved that the Nissan Note was performing well.
At Stephens Engineering, we have many years of experience in repairing automatic transmissions and the manufacture of replacement components. Contact Stephens Engineering to book your vehicle now.

As you’d expect from the automatic transmission experts in the Stephens Engineering workshop, it’s been another busy week and for us, it’s all about automatic transmission repairs. We’re sharing a small snapshot of some of the vehicles and their problems that we’ve seen this week.
2012 Vauxhall Insignia was brought in needing automatic transmission repairs. This Vauxhall Insignia has a front wheel drive six speed automatic transmission and in the Vauxhall Insignia, this unit does seem to have issues after approximately seventy thousand miles. Harsh gear changes were noted and this Vauxhall was brought in just in time for us to repair and return to smooth running.
2011 Vauxhall Astra which had covered 32,000 miles was brought in with gear change problems and no reverse gear. After a thorough diagnostic scan, solenoid codes were noted and on inspection, we found that the transmission unit had overheated and damaged the internal components. We carried out automatic transmission repairs, removing and dismantling the Astra’s transmission and fitting a replacement torque converter. After re-fitting the Vauxhall Astra automatic transmission, the vehicle was running well.
2008 BMW X5 with a z.f. six speed automatic transmission was brought in with a slip in both 5th and 6th gear, the diagnostic scan picked codes highlighting a problem with the E-clutch assembly. When the BMW X5 gearbox was removed and dismantled and the E-clutch was pressure tested to check for pressure loss. We replaced the E-clutch unit and rebuilt the transmission using the original z.f. components and after some thorough automatic transmission repairs, the gearbox was back to original performance.

Vauxhall Astra Gearbox Repaired by the Stephens Engineering Team
A Vauxhall Astra gearbox repaired with week by the experienced automatic transmission experts at Stephens Engineering. We recently inspected and carried out a Vauxhall Astra gearbox repair. The 2011 Vauxhall Astra was brought into the Stephens Engineering workshop and had covered 32,000 miles. The Astra was experiencing problems during gear changes and the Astra had lost the reverse gear. When the Vauxhall Astra was brought into the workshop, we carried out a detailed diagnostic check and on scanning the vehicle, we noted there were fault codes for the Astra’s solenoids. When the transmission oil was checked, it confirmed that the automatic transmission unit had overheated and as a result, the internal components had suffered damage due to being burnt.
We removed and dismantled the Vauxhall Astra gearbox and found that all the Astra drive clutches and gear sets were damaged. A complete overhaul of the automatic transmission was carried out and a replacement torque converter was fitted to the Astra gearbox. The Astra automatic gearbox was refitted and all of the adaptions were re-set.
To check that the faults have been fully resolved, we carry out a long road test and the long road test confirmed that the Vauxhall Astra gearbox repair was successful.

Gearboxes Repairs in Ware
The Stephens Engineering workshop has been extremely busy over the past month repairing automatic gearboxes and here’s just a snapshot of a week in the Stephens Engineering workshop where we carry out our gearbox repair to a range of different vehicles.
This week we have repaired the automatic transmission on many cars and one of the first was a 2009 Audi A5. The Audi A5 has an eight speed, front wheel drive automatic transmission was brought into us because of the gearbox warning light showing during motorway driving and harsh gear changes. After a diagnostic scan, the Audi A5 automatic transmission was removed and dismantled and after re-fitting the automatic transmission, the Audi A5 is now running well.
We’ve repaired a Bentley four wheel drive transmission with the six speed Z F unit. The Bentley was brought into the workshop with a complaint of a bad whine and vibration whilst the Bentley was under acceleration. Our customer was convinced the issue was with the Bentley’s gearbox, however, we were not convinced and after several checks, we decided to change all the Bentley’s gearbox and engine mountings before we condemned the Bentley’s automatic transmission. A road test confirmed our expert opinion was correct.
We’re repaired the automatic transmission of a 2009 Mercedes B Class. One of the most common automatic transmission failures for both the Mercedes B Class and Mercedes A Class fitted with the C V T type transmission are electrical. The control unit for this gearbox is in the sump, making it subject to extreme temperature change and small particles of metal can result in the control unit getting confused. We rectified the fault by replacing the Mercedes B Class transmission control unit. This then needs to be programmed and reset. Transmission fluid and filter are also changed.
The next gearbox repair to be carried out was a 2006 Nissan Note. The Nissan Note has a gearbox problem and was experiencing fourth gear slip. As the Nissan Note had covered more than 100,000 miles, most of the Nissan Note automatic transmission components were showing signs of extensive wear. To carry out a gearbox repair to this Nissan Note, we undertook a complete overhaul of the Nissan Note’s automatic transmission and after long road test and leak check, the vehicle was running well.
When you bring your vehicle to Stephens Engineering, you can be sure that your gearbox repair is being carried out by an experienced team of automatic transmission experts.

Mercedes Gearbox Repair
We carried out a Mercedes gearbox repair to a Mercedes ambulance vehicle for the St John’s Ambulance. We gave this emergency vehicle priority. The Mercedes gearbox repair was needed as this emergency vehicle had hardly any drive. The Mercedes was brought into the workshop and by lunchtime, the automatic transmission had been removed. When the Mercedes transmission was inspected, we found that it was completely worn out due to the heavy hard work it had undertaken in it’s service with the St John’s Ambulance.
The Mercedes automatic transmission was overhauled and refitted, the Mercedes was still very under powered on the road test and so we carried out further checks to the engine of the Mercedes. The further checks revealed that the Mercedes exhaust diesel particulate filter unit was severely blocked. We removed the Mercedes exhaust diesel particulate filter unit and this was sent to a local specialist to be re-furbished. Once the unit had been re-furbished, we refitted the exhaust diesel particulate filter unit and all the fault codes cleared. A second road was carried out and Mercedes gearbox repair was successful as the vehicle was running well and ready to get back into service.

Chrysler Voyager Gearbox Repair
We carried out a Chrysler Voyager gearbox repair in the Stephens Engineering workshop recently.
The 2008 Chrysler Voyager was delivered to our workshop with very little drive and binding up. Following a detailed inspection, we noted that the engine oil was burnt and so we removed and stripped the automatic transmission of the Chrysler Voyager. This 2008 Chrysler Voyagers is a diesel model and tend to be more prone to suffering from failure of the torque converter. We cut open the torque converter and found that it was in quite good condition but further into the automatic transmission, we found signs of water contamination. We ran further testing of the automatic gearbox cooling system which is part of the Chrysler’s air conditioning condenser and the leak was found.
We overhauled the automatic gearbox and the torque converter and then refitted them to the vehicle. We fitted a new condenser radiator and flushed the system to ensure there were no further leaks and or water contamination to the gearbox. All the trouble codes were cleared and we gave the vehicle a ten mile road test which found the automatic transmission was working fine and the vehicle was driving well.
