Automatic Transmission Repairs – A week in the Workshop
Each week brings us a different challenge and this week the automatic transmission specialists at Stephens Engineering have been busy repairing automatic gearboxes and fault finding. We have carried out a number of automatic transmission repairs this week and here is a snapshot of what we see in our workshop:
2011 Mercedes Sprinter van with a loss of drive, the transmission required a complete overhaul after we discovered water had leaked from radiator into the gearbox.
2005 Nissan X-Trail, this vehicle was referred to us from a local garage with a whine from the automatic gearbox or transfer case. We weren’t convinced that automatic transmission repairs were needed and this fault was found to be a front wheel bear which we replaced, saving our customer the cost and inconvenience of a complete automatic transmission rebuild.
Mercedes 500 cl with a loud whine in the lower gears. We stripped down and completely overhauled the gearbox, replacing the worn and damaged parts.
2011 Nissan Juke, this vehicle was juddering and stalling. We carried out a diagnostic text, after removing the sump discovered metal particles. Automatic transmission repairs were needed so the automatic transmission was removed and overhauled.
This week, we have carried automatic transmission repairs to a number of different models vehicles and also repaired faults that were unrelated to the automatic gearbox. When you bring your vehicle to Stephens Engineering, you’re bringing your vehicle to the automatic transmission specialists in Ware.

BMW 740 Automatic Transmission Faults
Last week in the Stephens Engineering workshop, one of the vehicles brought in for our expert opinion and diagnostic skills was a five year old BMW 740. This BMW 740 vehicle was brought in to the workshop with a report of transmission faults. A full and comprehensive diagnostic scan was carried out in the Stephens Engineering workshop by our skilled mechanics and no fault codes were recorded. We then carried out a road test and after running for 10 miles, the shift pattern of the BMW 740 became erratic. Once the vehicle was back in the workshop, a sample of the gearbox oil was taken for a glycol test. The glycol test confirmed that the transmission fluid had been contaminated and contained an amount of antifreeze fluid. We then removed the automatic transmission and thoroughly overhauled the gearbox, together with the torque converter.
The automatic transmission failure for this BMW 740, was the result of the gearbox intercooler mounted in the engine bay.
The automatic transmission experts at Stephens Engineering are here to repair and overhaul your automatic transmission, whether the fault is intermittent or ongoing. Our knowledge and expertise with automatic transmissions is second to none.
A Week in the Stephens Engineering Workshop – Automatic Transmission Specialists
As you would expect from the automatic gearbox specialists at Stephens Engineering, it been all about automatic transmission faults last week. Here’s a brief snapshot of our week in the Stephen Engineering workshop repairing automatic transmissions with just a few of the vehicles we’ve repaired:
We’ve cured the erratic shift pattern for a BMW 740 series after diagnosing contamination in the transmission fluid.
Using our diagnostic scan, we found a fault with the Mercedes “C” class transmission control unit, after replacing the part and reprogramming, running well.
The 2005 Vauxhall Astra with a semi automatic gearbox came in with an “F” mode fault code and was non-starting. After diagnostics, an intermittent fault was found in the clutch actuator unit of the Vauxhall Astra. The Vauxhall Astra’s actuators were removed and cleaned and the vehicle is now running.
A 2006 Jaguar S Type had an intermittent fault which the scan showed possible solenoid problems in the valve body. Thorough testing revealed a solenoid problem plus a leak off in pressure in the valve body assembly. After fitting new components and sump filter unit, a ten mile road test confirmed all was well.
