Vauxhall Astra Gearbox Repaired by the Stephens Engineering Team
A Vauxhall Astra gearbox repaired with week by the experienced automatic transmission experts at Stephens Engineering. We recently inspected and carried out a Vauxhall Astra gearbox repair. The 2011 Vauxhall Astra was brought into the Stephens Engineering workshop and had covered 32,000 miles. The Astra was experiencing problems during gear changes and the Astra had lost the reverse gear. When the Vauxhall Astra was brought into the workshop, we carried out a detailed diagnostic check and on scanning the vehicle, we noted there were fault codes for the Astra’s solenoids. When the transmission oil was checked, it confirmed that the automatic transmission unit had overheated and as a result, the internal components had suffered damage due to being burnt.
We removed and dismantled the Vauxhall Astra gearbox and found that all the Astra drive clutches and gear sets were damaged. A complete overhaul of the automatic transmission was carried out and a replacement torque converter was fitted to the Astra gearbox. The Astra automatic gearbox was refitted and all of the adaptions were re-set.
To check that the faults have been fully resolved, we carry out a long road test and the long road test confirmed that the Vauxhall Astra gearbox repair was successful.
At Stephens Engineering, we fault find and repair Vauxhall Astra automatic transmission faults.

Gearboxes Repairs in Ware
The Stephens Engineering workshop has been extremely busy over the past month repairing automatic gearboxes and here’s just a snapshot of a week in the Stephens Engineering workshop where we carry out our gearbox repair to a range of different vehicles.
This week we have repaired the automatic transmission on many cars and one of the first was a 2009 Audi A5. The Audi A5 has an eight speed, front wheel drive automatic transmission was brought into us because of the gearbox warning light showing during motorway driving and harsh gear changes. After a diagnostic scan, the Audi A5 automatic transmission was removed and dismantled and after re-fitting the automatic transmission, the Audi A5 is now running well.
We’ve repaired a Bentley four wheel drive transmission with the six speed Z F unit. The Bentley was brought into the workshop with a complaint of a bad whine and vibration whilst the Bentley was under acceleration. Our customer was convinced the issue was with the Bentley’s gearbox, however, we were not convinced and after several checks, we decided to change all the Bentley’s gearbox and engine mountings before we condemned the Bentley’s automatic transmission. A road test confirmed our expert opinion was correct.
We’re repaired the automatic transmission of a 2009 Mercedes B Class. One of the most common automatic transmission failures for both the Mercedes B Class and Mercedes A Class fitted with the C V T type transmission are electrical. The control unit for this gearbox is in the sump, making it subject to extreme temperature change and small particles of metal can result in the control unit getting confused. We rectified the fault by replacing the Mercedes B Class transmission control unit. This then needs to be programmed and reset. Transmission fluid and filter are also changed.
The next gearbox repair to be carried out was a 2006 Nissan Note. The Nissan Note has a gearbox problem and was experiencing fourth gear slip. As the Nissan Note had covered more than 100,000 miles, most of the Nissan Note automatic transmission components were showing signs of extensive wear. To carry out a gearbox repair to this Nissan Note, we undertook a complete overhaul of the Nissan Note’s automatic transmission and after long road test and leak check, the vehicle was running well.

Chrysler Voyager Gearbox Repair
We carried out a Chrysler Voyager gearbox repair in the Stephens Engineering workshop recently.
The 2008 Chrysler Voyager was delivered to our workshop with very little drive and binding up. Following a detailed inspection, we noted that the engine oil was burnt and so we removed and stripped the automatic transmission of the Chrysler Voyager. This 2008 Chrysler Voyagers is a diesel model and tend to be more prone to suffering from failure of the torque converter. We cut open the torque converter and found that it was in quite good condition but further into the automatic transmission, we found signs of water contamination. We ran further testing of the automatic gearbox cooling system which is part of the Chrysler’s air conditioning condenser and the leak was found.
We overhauled the automatic gearbox and the torque converter and then refitted them to the vehicle. We fitted a new condenser radiator and flushed the system to ensure there were no further leaks and or water contamination to the gearbox. All the trouble codes were cleared and we gave the vehicle a ten mile road test which found the automatic transmission was working fine and the vehicle was driving well.
Does your diesel Chrysler Voyager have very little drive? Could your vehicle be suffering from potential torque converter failure? With Stephens Engineering, you have peace of mind that your vehicle is being repaired by automatic transmission specialists.

Nissan X-Trail Gearbox Whine
In the Stephens Engineering workshop we looked at Nissan X-Trail gearbox whine. This vehicle was referred to us by a local garage, reporting a whine noise from the automatic gearbox or transfer case. At Stephens Engineering, we specialise in resolving and repairing faults to automatic transmission that are difficult pinpoint.
Part of our diagnostic procedure for this Nissan X-Trail, was to take the vehicle on a long drive in, during which time several test procedures are carried out to locate the fault. With our years of experience, in the workshop, we were not convinced the Nissan X-Trail gearbox whine was in fact related to the automatic transmission and on the vehicle lift, it was hard to pin-point the fault as there is no load being applied.
With our years of experience, in our opinion, this was a problem with the off side front wheel bearing. Nissan X-Trail front wheel bearing was stripped down and fully inspected. The hub on a Nissan X-Trail comes as one part, complete with bearings and this was fitted and a further road test carried and the Stephens Engineering diagnosis proved to be correct; there was no fault with the automatic transmission, the problem was a wheel bearing.
Our expertise and experience ensured the correct repair was carried out and we have a happy customer who thought he was have to re-build the automatic transmission on his Nissan X-Trail.

Automatic Transmission Repairs – A week in the Workshop
Each week brings us a different challenge and this week the automatic transmission specialists at Stephens Engineering have been busy repairing automatic gearboxes and fault finding. We have carried out a number of automatic transmission repairs this week and here is a snapshot of what we see in our workshop:
2011 Mercedes Sprinter van with a loss of drive, the transmission required a complete overhaul after we discovered water had leaked from radiator into the gearbox.
2005 Nissan X-Trail, this vehicle was referred to us from a local garage with a whine from the automatic gearbox or transfer case. We weren’t convinced that automatic transmission repairs were needed and this fault was found to be a front wheel bear which we replaced, saving our customer the cost and inconvenience of a complete automatic transmission rebuild.
Mercedes 500 cl with a loud whine in the lower gears. We stripped down and completely overhauled the gearbox, replacing the worn and damaged parts.
2011 Nissan Juke, this vehicle was juddering and stalling. We carried out a diagnostic text, after removing the sump discovered metal particles. Automatic transmission repairs were needed so the automatic transmission was removed and overhauled.
This week, we have carried automatic transmission repairs to a number of different models vehicles and also repaired faults that were unrelated to the automatic gearbox. When you bring your vehicle to Stephens Engineering, you’re bringing your vehicle to the automatic transmission specialists in Ware.

Automatic Transmission Repair Specialists – A Week in the Workshop
It’s been another busy and interesting week fault finding and repairing automatic gearboxes in the Stephens Engineering workshop. This week’s brief snapshot of a week in the Stephens Engineering workshop highlights just a few of the vehicles we have worked on with automatic transmission faults:
A 2009 Range Rover Vogue with a “slip and jerk” on a very light throttle when in traffic with no fault codes on the scan, however, we discovered the cause of the problem for the Range Rover Vogue, after dismantling the transmission, pressure leaks were found in the clutch drum. We repaired the automatic transmission and the vehicle is now running well.
A 2012 Nissan Qashqai with a whine through all the gear speeds was brought in to the workshop. On dismantling the automatic gearbox, we found the bearings on the main and input shafts had lost their case hardening, the oil cooler pipe had been leaking and a lack of lubrication may have caused the bearing failure. The bearings and shaft were replaced and the transmission refitted and all was well.
A 2012 Ford Focus “B” Max 2012 came in with bad noise vibration going into third gear. A diagnostic scan of the vehicle produced no fault codes, confirming this was a mechanical fault, not an electronics failure. The gearbox was repaired and cleaned throughout and refitted with a new dual clutch unit and the transmission is now performing well.
A Vauxhall Omega was brought in, stuck in limp mode. An oil sample was taken and it confirmed there water content in the transmission fluid, thorough examination revealed the breather pipe had split and allowed water ingress into the gearbox. The complete gearbox and torque converter were fully overhauled and after replacing the damaged parts, everything was running correctly.
A 2005 Mini Cooper was bought in with a limp mode problem, this was a permanent fault which appeared to be in the wiring. This was stripped back and the faulty wire replaced. A new filter and oil were installed and all faults were cured.
