Volkswagen Passat DSG

A 2008 Volkswagen Passat with a DSG, “direct sequential gearbox” was brought into the Stephens Engineering Automatics workshop for automatic transmission repair. The customer had noticed when driving the vehicle that there was a whine and an intermittent loss of top and reverse gears when driving the Passat.  The automatic  transmission was removed in the workshop, then dismantled and inspected to uncover the automatic gearbox fault.  On inspection, we found that the dual clutch was badly worn. The vehicle had covered over a hundred thousand miles and so, the amount of wear to the dual clutch was to be expected. Our thorough and rigorous inspection of the Passat DSG transmission unit found that the main shaft bearings had also worn.  The Passat’s DSG transmission was completely cleaned in the workshop and the worn main shaft bearing were replaced.  The Volkwagen Passat DSG transmission was refitted and a new dual clutch was fitted. After resetting the adaptations, the vehicle was taken for a long road test to check that the whine was no longer present and that there was no loss of top and reverse gears.  The long road test confirmed that the vehicle was running well and that everything was back to normal.
